Identification of Ethylene as a Volatile Product of the Fungus Penicillium Digitatum.

چکیده
Experiments reported independently by BIALE (1) and MILLER, WINSTON, and FISHER (8) revealed that the common green mold of citrus fruits, P. digitatum, produces a physiologically active emanation whose effects on plant tissue are the same as those caused by ethylene gas. It was shown by the latter authors and by BIALE and SHEPHERD (3) that this fungus produces this emanation whether grown on its natural host or in culture, and PRATT (10) showed that production of the emanation does not depend on major nutrient components of the culture solution but does appear to be related to active growth and respiration of the culture. Production of the active gas by fungus-infected fruit has been further studied by ROHRBAUGH (12) and BIALE (2). Except for recent evidence of NICKERSON (9) that ethylene may be produced by Blastomyces dermatitidis and two other human pathogens, P. digitatum is the only fungus reported to have this activity. Biological testing of various other plant pathogens has given negative results (1, 14). Since P. digitatum is a particularly promising organism for the study of the mechanism of ethylene formation, it was of interest to verify chemllically the identity of the active gas produced.

Involvement of ethylene biosynthesis and perception in the susceptibility of citrus fruits to Penicillium digitatum infection and the accumulation of defence-related mRNAs.
Citrus fruits infected with the fungus Penicillium digitatum substantially increase the production of the plant hormone ethylene. In this study, the regulation of ethylene biosynthesis in Citrus sinensis-infected fruits and its putative involvement in an active defence response against P. digitatum infection is examined. Ethylene production is demonstrated as being the result of the co-ordinate...
متن کاملMethionine-induced Ethylene Production by Penicillium digitatum.
Shake cultures, in contrast to static cultures of Penicillium digitatum grown in liquid medium, were induced by methionine to produce ethylene. The induction was concentration-dependent, and 7 mM was optimum for the methionine effect. In the presence of methionine, glucose (7 mM) enhanced ethylene production but did not itself induce ethylene production. The induction process lasted several hou...
متن کاملCharacterization of the Phosphate-mediated Control of Ethylene Production by Penicillium digitatum.
Characterization of the phosphate effect on ethylene production by Penicillium digitatum is reported. A low level of phosphate (0.001 millimolar) was about 200 to 500 times as effective as a high phosphate level (100 millimolar) in stimulating ethylene production and the stimulation was readily reversed by addition of phosphate. This phosphate effect did not operate in static cultures. The prec...
متن کاملMapping and Identification of Antifungal Peptides in the Putative Antifungal Protein AfpB from the Filamentous Fungus Penicillium digitatum
Antifungal proteins (AFPs) from Ascomycetes are small cysteine-rich proteins that are abundantly secreted and show antifungal activity against non-producer fungi. A gene coding for a class B AFP (AfpB) was previously identified in the genome of the plant pathogen Penicillium digitatum. However, previous attempts to detect the AfpB protein were not successful despite the high expression of the c...
متن کاملFatal pneumonia caused by Penicillium digitatum: a case report
BACKGROUND Penicillium species are among the most common fungi present in the environment and are usually considered non-pathogenic to humans. However, in immunocompromised hosts they can be virulent pathogens and can cause death. Penicillium digitatum is a plant pathogen that commonly causes a postharvest fungal disease of citrus called green mould; it very rarely causes systemic mycosis in hu...
